Introduced in 1977 by Swedish Match as the world’s first portioned type snus, Tre Ankare is a very popular snus with a sweet tobacco taste. Tre Ankare undergoes a rigorous quality control process, ensuring that only the finest tobacco ends up in each portion. Every can of Tre Ankare contains 24 portions of average strength snus, with 21.6 grams of snus per can.
Upon opening my can of Tre Ankare, I noticed that the portions were arranged in a star formation similar to other offerings by Swedish Match. This is a nice touch, since every portion in the formation is wedged to fit comfortably in your mouth. The aroma of this snus is quite nice, and it smells like tobacco and a bit of herbs (it reminded me a little bit of General Green Harvest, but without any bergamot. Once I placed a portion in my mouth, I noticed a sweet (albeit weak) tobacco flavor which was complimented by an herbal taste. Although the herbs were subtle in taste, I did notice a bit of an earthy tone which was again reminiscent of Green Harvest. There is very little salt flavor, so as time goes on Tre Ankare doesn’t really get saltier like some other brands do. However, after about the 50 minute mark, I began to lose the taste and it became quite flavorless.
The portion material was soft and comfortable, especially for a white portion. The portions didn’t irritate my gums, and were quite dry. The nicotine kick wasn’t very strong, and it only began to kick in after 10 minutes (once the snus was sufficiently moist). Tre Ankare produced very little drip, and I was able to keep a portion in for around an hour without it getting overly moist.
Overall, Tre Ankare is a good snus for the lover of tobacco flavored snus. I find that Tre Ankare pairs well with coffee or tea, especially in the morning. My only complaint is the the nicotine buzz takes a long time to kick in, and its quite weak.
