Produced by the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, Skoal Smooth Mint is a brand of snus targeted at American consumers. The Skoal name is a well established brand of dipping tobacco, and as snus continues to explode in popularity, USST has released Skoal Snus as their first foray into the snus market. In the past I’ve tried both Marlboro Snus as well as American Camel Snus (not to be confused with its Swedish counterpart!) and concluded that American snus is much weaker and not nearly as tasty as true Swedish Snus, so I was hoping that Skoal Snus might be a little better. Every can of Skoal Snus comes with 15 portions in a large portion format for a total of 16.5 grams per can.
Soon after I opened my can, I was greeted with a strong and sweet spearmint aroma, and I couldn’t detect any tobacco whatsoever. Not long after I put a portion in my mouth, I began to notice a strong taste of sweet spearmint. Unlike most Swedish brands, I found that the mint taste was quite artificial, and much too sweet for my tastes. I didn’t taste any tobacco whatsoever, and after about thirty minutes the portions began to taste like a mixture of sweet and salty.
The portions are some of the largest I’ve ever seen for snus, and they’re nearly the size of maxi portions. Unfortunately, despite the the size of the portions they produced a very mild nicotine buzz more along the lines of a mini portion snus rather than regular portions. The material was soft, but I did find that the portions were a little big to fit comfortably in my lip. They were also quite dry, producing very little drip until around the half hour mark (due to the sweetness). I generally left portions in for about forty five minutes before removing them due to the overly sweet drip.
Overall, I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of Smooth Mint. The snus itself is overly sweet and I could hardly feel a buzz, even when I used two portions at once. Until USST makes some changes to their formula, I recommend sticking to the Swedish brands, as I find that all American Snus has a tendency to be weak and overly sweet!
