Released by Swedish Match in 2012, Nick & Johnny Black Tarmac is another licorice flavored snus brand, which got me excited since I’m a fan of licorice flavored snuses. The Nick & Johnny lineup features colorful can artwork and generally tends to be popular amongst university students. Each can of N&J Black Tarmac comes with 22 extra strong portions with 1.1 grams of snus per portion.
After opening my can, I noticed a tobacco smell which was complimented by a licorice aroma. Unlike some of the other licorice brands out there, I found Black Tarmac’s licorice taste to compliment the tobacco rather than overpower it. The tobacco was very earthy and fairly mild, and the licorice helped to give it some character. After fifteen minutes the licorice flavor subsided and I was left with a mellow tobacco taste. Over time the taste became increasingly mellow, and I usually took my portions out prior to the one hour mark (generally between 40-60 mins). I really enjoyed the taste since Tarmac combines two of my favorite snus flavors (tobacco and licorice) and does it in a way so neither taste is overly strong.
The portions were quite large, and I really enjoyed the fact that they contained over one gram of snus as opposed to the .65-.9 grams I’ve seen in quite a few brands lately. I find the larger portions give you a richer flavor experience, but they are a little bulky in comparison to some of the smaller sizes out there. I began to feel a strong nicotine buzz come only a minute or so prior to putting a portion in and it was very nice. I didn’t experience much drip until the forty-five minute mark, and even then it was only very little.
Overall, I enjoyed Nick & Johnny Black Tarmac. The licorice taste worked well to compliment the tobacco taste without overpowering it, and the strong nicotine buzz was pretty nice to have as well. Black Tarmac is a great strong snus which pairs well with Anise liquers and works great as a pleasant after dinner digestif.
