Produced by Mellgren’s, Mellgren’s IPA Edition is a limited edition series of snus which aims to create a high quality snus experience. According to Mellgren’s, “after intense cooperation between Master Blender Conny Andersson and Mellgren’s Fine Tobacco we can present its own snuff we call Mellgren’s IPA Edition. To this snuff, we have had the IPA (Indian Pale Ale) as foreground in manufacturing. Conny has extensive experience in tobacco and is among other behind Swedish Match Kardus and Islay Whisky Snus.”
After opening my can of Single Cut, the first thing that I noticed was an incredible aroma of fresh tobacco, complimented by hints of lemon, hops, and possibly a few others which I have yet to identify. IPA edition is produced using high grade tobaccos selected from Brazil, Guatemala, South Africa, and the United States, and the unique flavors of the tobaccos from each of the regions produces an incredibly complex and delicious flavor which continues to develop as you use it. At first I noticed a strong taste of grassy tobacco, and it was complimented by hints of citrus as well as a tad of hops. As time passed, the tobacco flavor became increasingly salty and herbal, and the transition was very enjoyable. The flavor is inspired from an IPA beer known as Sculpin IPA from the famed Ballast Point brewery located in San Diego, and although I have yet to try it, I’ve heard great things about it!
The snus itself is ground larger than most other loose brands, and I find that it nears the length of long cut dip. Furthermore, IPA Edition is quite moist and I began to feel a strong and pleasant nicotine buzz set in within only a few minutes. I generally removed my portions around the fifty minute mark when I felt that the drip became too strong for my tastes.
Overall, Mellgren’s IPA Single Cut is a delicious, high quality snus brand with a complex flavor that develops over time. I highly recommend trying IPA Edition at least once, especially if you’re a fan of tobacco dominant brands. If you have the opportunity, I definitely recommend pairing Melgren’s IPA Edition with Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA!
