Manufactured by GN Tobacco (the makers of the popular Oden’s line of snus), Islay Whiskey Snus is a recently released limited edition small batch snus. Produced under the careful guidance of snus expert Conny Anderson (formerly of Swedish Match), Islay Whiskey is flavored in barrels of Scottish whiskey giving it a unique character. Unlike most brands of snus which use a blend of different parts from the tobacco leaf, Islay Whiskey is made from 100% lamina, meaning that only the full tobacco leaves (and not the stem) are used during production. Each can of Islay Whiskey comes with 20 grams of high quality snus.
Upon opening my can of Islay Whiskey, I soon noticed an aroma of smokey tobacco and a hint of whiskey in the background. Unlike most brands of snus which are pasteurized, Islay Whiskey is fire-cured, producing a distinct taste. After trying a few portions over the course of the day, I soon began to notice that Islay Whiskey has an initial taste of smokey tobacco with a little hint of whiskey rounded out by a bit of salt. Although the taste wasn’t extremely strong, I was surprised at how smooth it was. As time passsed the whiskey began to subside and I was left with a taste of mild tobacco and a bit of salt. Surprisingly, Islay Whiskey didn’t become overly bitter as time passed (like most tobacco dominant snuses do), and as a result I was able to leave portions in for nearly an hour and still have a hint of flavor.
The portion material was very comfortable, and the portions were plump and somewhat moist. Rolling a portion around in my fingers for a moment, I noticed that the tobacco is soft to the touch and evenly distributed throughout each portion. Since the portions were a little drier than most original portion snuses, it took a little longer for the nicotine buzz to set in, and when it did it was of average strength (which is my favorite nicotine level) and lasted for about twenty minutes before starting to subside. Due to the moisture content, I was able to leave portions in for nearly an hour without experiencing drip.
As a whole, I feel that Oden’s did a great job with this snus, and Islay Whiskey is definitely up there in my list of favorite snus brands. With its mild taste, premium tobacco, and comfortable portions, Islay Whiskey produces a very high quality experience all around (I also loved the metal can and its design!) and is long lasting. Although the price is steep, I strongly recommend all lovers of tobacco dominant snus brands to give it a try before it disappears, as its a great snus to savor every once and awhile! Islay Whiskey pairs well with strong drinks such as whiskey and Canadian rye, as well as coffee in the morning.
