Released in early February by JTI Sweden, Gustavus Slim Strong Cut is the third and final member of the Gustavus Slim Cut Series (after Blue and Salvi). Unlike the other two brands, Strong is a traditional tobacco tasting snus flavored with bergamot and boasts a higher (10mg/g) nicotine content than the other two (which contain 8mg/g). Like the rest of the Slim Cut lineup, Strong contains 22 portions for a total of 15.4 grams of snus per can.
Not long after opening my can of Slim Cut strong, I was soon noticing aromas of tobacco and bergamot with hints of grassy herbs in the background, and it definitely reminded me of General XR in terms of taste. As a white portion snus, Strong took a few minutes for the flavor to begin developing. Starting out, there’s a dominant taste of grassy tobacco combined with bergamot to round things off. I found that after twenty minutes the bergamot flavor disappears and is replaced by an increasingly strong tobacco taste which progresses for about forty five minutes before starting to lose flavor.
Much like the rest of the Slim Cut line, Strong uses soft portion material and is quite comfortable in my upper lip. As the name implies, the portions themselves are a slim form factor, and they fit comfortably in my lip while remaining discreet. As a result of Strong’s lower moisture content, I noticed that the nicotine buzz took a little longer than usual to kick in, but once it did I felt a strong pleasant buzz for nearly half an hour before it began to drop off, and I generally began to notice drip set in around the fifty minute mark.
In summary, Gustavus Slim Cut Strong makes for a tasty tobacco dominant snus for those on a budget, and the soft portion material is definitely a plus. However, I do find it to be quite average in terms of flavor, if only because there’s already so many traditional tobacco and bergamot snus brands available. I find that Slim Cut strong goes well with a nice cup of coffee when I want to start my day off with a kick!
