Belonging to JTI Sweden, Gustavus Original portion is an average strength tobacco dominant snus which is flavored with hints of citrus and floral notes. Each can of Gustavus Original has 18 grams of average strength snus per can (8mg of nicotine per portion).
After I cracked open my fresh can, I soon noticed that Gustavus has an interesting and unique aroma, consisting mainly of slightly smokey tobacco, ammonia (a sign of freshness!), some floral notes, and just a hint of citrus. After I tried a few portions out, I began to notice that things start out with a slightly salty tobacco taste which is complimented by just a touch of flower (possibly lavender). The citrus flavor smelled like a cross between lemon and bergamot, but it was quite faint and hard to detect. Over time the tobacco flavor became increasingly smokey and salty as well, and it was definitely interesting to see how it develops flavor wise over the course of an hour!
The portions are made with standard material, and they come just a tad moist. I experience little drip until the thirty five minute mark, and I usually took more portions out after an hour when they became too salty for my tastes. Because the portions were just a little moist, it took about four minutes for me to start experiencing a buzz, and it lasted for a little over thirty minutes before subsiding.
Overall, Gustavus Original Portion is a tasty tobacco flavored snus brand with just a hint of other flavors to keep things interesting. Original makes for a good daily rotation snus as the flavors aren’t too overpowering. If you enjoy tobacco flavored brands, I highly recommend ordering a can or two to test out! I found that Gustavus tends to pair well with stronger flavors such as smokey porters or some good scotch.
