Created in 1915, Swedish Match’s Grov snus is one of the oldest and most popular snus brands on the market today. Earlier this year, Swedish Match released Grov Voltage 2014 portion, a limited edition Grov variant which promises “a robust snus with a strong but well rounded tobacco flavor.” Every can of Grov Voltage comes with 24 grams of average strength snus with 1 gram per portion.
I’m a lover of tobacco dominant snus brands, so once I got my hands on a can of Voltage, I was quick to open it up and take in the aromas. I noticed a strong smell of tobacco and ammonia (an indicator of freshness), with hints of grass, nuts and wood. After I put a portion in my mouth, I soon began to taste a mellow tobacco flavor which had notes of grassy herbs. Although I didn’t taste much of the nutty aroma, I definitely tasted a subtle woody note (I want to say oak, but I’m not completely certain!), and it really worked to compliment the tobacco taste rather than overpower it. As time passed the tobacco flavor became increasingly mild, and I didn’t find that it got overly salty as time went on (like some tobacco dominant flavors). I kept my portions in for over an hour, and noticed that the tobacco taste continued to develop until about the one hour mark.
The portion material was average quality, and the portions were only slightly moist which made for the nicotine buzz to set in a little slower than most original portion snuses (it took me 3-4 minutes instead of 1-2 to feel a buzz), but it was pleasant and lasted for about twenty minutes before starting to subside. I really like the fact that Voltage has full one gram portions (with 24 per can), as the extra snus brings out a stronger flavor and cans end up lasting me a little longer than when there’s only 20 portions.
As I whole, I loved Grov Voltage for its complex flavors and well rounded tobacco flavor, and its something I can see myself using in my daily rotation as my go-to tobacco tasting snus. I feel that Swedish Match really got the flavor balance on this one right, and most importantly I felt the salt content was not too strong which allowed the flavor to continue to develop for quite some time!
