A brand new entry to the General Lineup of snus, Rustic Blend belongs to the General Variation offshoot, a premium brand that Swedish Match claims to deliver complex flavors and a high quality experience. Each can of Rustic Blend comes with 21.6 grams of snus with 0.9 grams of average strength tobacco per portion (which is slightly less than the 24 grams and 1 gram portions of its sister brand Variation Smoky Oak).
With a fresh can open, there’s an aroma of mild tobacco complimented by bergamot and some herbal notes. After I had tried a few portions, I began to feel that the taste of Rustic Blend reminded me a lot of General Tailored, and it consisted mainly of a mild tobacco taste with a twist of bergamot. The flavor wasn’t very strong, and I could also taste some herbal undertones which served to give to the mild tobacco a bit more character. I’m not sure quite sure why, but Rustic blend contains less snus per portion than Smoky Oak, and I found myself wishing it had more per portion in order to give it a more pronounced taste.
The portions used standard material and were slightly different from General Tailored Smoky Oak’s (which felt more coarse). They fit comfortably in my lip and produced little drip allowing me to keep portions in for nearly an hour. As a white snus, I began to feel a nicotine buzz begin to take hold around the five minute mark, and it was pleasant without being overpowering.
Overall, I didn’t find Rustic Blend to be anything special as a premium snus. The flavor reminded me a lot of what’s already out there, and nothing in the blend really stood out in my eyes. Personally, I find General Tailored to taste very similar, but it has the superior natufibe portions which render it very soft and comfortable in the lip. Rustic Blend does pair nicely with teas as well as wheat beers and IPAs however, especially due to the minimal amount of drip produced.
