Produced by Swedish Match, General Mackmyra was specially developed to celebrate this year’s 150th anniversary of the General Snus brand, one of the oldest and most popular brands still on the market today. Carefully blended by the master snus blenders Lars Jonsson and Mattias Schyberg, General Mackmyra was also worked on in collaboration with Mackmyra’s Master Whiskey Blender Angela D’Orazio. I’ve previously enjoyed a few whiskey flavored brands including Islay Whiskey and Crafted Snus Whiskey, and so I was definitely curious to see how General Mackmyra would taste in comparison! Every can of General Mackymyra comes with 24 regular strength portions which weight in at a gram each.
Not long after opening my can of Mackmyra, I began to notice a rich and complex aroma of earthy tobacco, as well as notes of whiskey, oak, nuts, and hints of smokiness. After placing a portion in my upper lip, I soon tasted a dominant earthy tobacco flavor which paired well with the taste of the whiskey. Aside from the primary flavors, I also detected other tastes including oak, nuts, and hints of smokiness. The tobacco taste developed over time, and I found that it became increasingly peppery and salty starting around the twenty minute mark. I also found that a smoky flavor began to develop halfway through my sessions which was quite pleasant, and it worked well with the increasingly salty taste.
The portions were made using a fairly soft material which reminded me a bit of Swedish Match’s Natufibe portions (although not quite as soft), and the snus inside them was evenly distributed. Since Mackmyra is a regular portion snus, I began to notice a nicotine buzz set in within two minutes, and it lasted for about half an hour before subsiding. On average, I usually kept my portions in for a little less than an hour before removing them due to drip.
As a whole, General Mackmyra is a superb snus which delivers an exceptional taste for the true snus connoisseur. I highly recommend trying General Mackmyra if you’re a fan of tobacco and whiskey dominant brands and are looking for something which goes the extra mile quality wise. I find Mackmyra pairs quite well with neat whiskey as well as Canadian Rye, but if you’re lucky enough to have some Mackmyra whiskey on hand, I definitely recommend pairing the two!
