Produced by Winnington AB of Sweden, the Epok snus line is a relatively new brand which offers an array of interesting flavors as well as boasting a purification process which renders their snus snow white. Recently introduced to this lineup is Epok Blåbär (Blueberry), an average strength snus with 0.7 grams of snus per portion and 16.8 grams per can. As someone who is a fan of fruit flavored snuses to mix up my daily rotation, I was excited to try Blåbär as I’ve never had a blueberry flavored snus before (and to my knowledge there’s no others currently on the market)!
Upon opening my can, I noticed an aroma of sweet blueberry and not much else. The smell was good, but it didn’t quite smell as strong as other fruit flavored brands I’ve had in the past. This may be because Epok’s flavoring contains xylitol (found in most chewing gums) as a sweetener as opposed to regular sugar, which is better for your teeth but alters the flavor somewhat. After placing a portion in my mouth, I noticed a mild blueberry taste which was just a little bit sweet and not very tart. The blueberry flavor wasn’t too strong, and after about ten minutes it began to be complimented by a taste of herbal tobacco and salt which gradually took over. The transition was nice, and the smoothness of the tobacco definitely pairs well with the blueberry.
The portions come in a slim format and are made of soft material which feels good in my lip. Epok uses a special environmentally friendly patented process in order to change the tobacco from brown to white. Aside from finding the white portions to be aesthetically pleasing, they also have a practical use for me if I happen to fall asleep with a portion in as it won’t leave a stain on my pillow like most snuses do! I experienced little drip with my portions, and I usually tended to leave them in for around an hour before taking them out.
Despite the subdued blueberry flavor, I enjoyed the portion design of Blåbär as well as the white portions. Furthermore, the tobacco flavor which eventually develops is quite nice and fairly long lasting in comparison with the blueberry. I definitely plan on picking up a few more cans of Epok Blåbär to add to my rotation, and it pairs especially well with tea as well as lagers!
