Launched in late October by AG Snus, Crafted Snus Whisky Original is a small batch of premium snus produced under the supervision of master snus blender Connie Andersson (the creator of Islay Whisky Snus and several editions of Swedish Match’s Kardus line). Much like Islay Whisky, Crafted Snus is comprised of 100% tobacco lamina (as opposed to using a mix of lamina and filler stalks like most other brands do), and it contains six different types of tobacco from around the world. Dedicated to taste and quality, Andersson explains on the Craftsnus website in Swedish that “My goal is to make the snus market tastier and more fun by not following the big brands. The snus market today looks like the beer market did five to ten years ago when all the beer looked and tasted like Carlsberg.” As someone who considers himself to be a snus connoisseur, I’m always excited to try new brands, especially ones from those who are passionate about snus! Every can of Crafted Snus comes with 20 portions with 11mg of nicotine each for a total of 18 grams of snus per can.
Not long after opening my can of Crafted Snus Whisky Original, I soon began to notice a dominant aroma of complex tobacco, and it was complimented by notes of whisky, smoke, wood, and peat. The whisky used in the production of Crafted Snus is a single malt whisky produced in the Scottish Highlands by a distiller known as Glenfarclas, and the result is a taste which is more earthy and peaty compared to Islay Whisky (which has a stronger taste). In addition to the whisky, Crafted Snus’ flavor is highly influenced by the blend of tobaccos used, which are Green River and Latakia (Amish tobaccos from Pennsylvania, USA), Mata Norte (tobacco from Brazil with a sweet yet intense flavor), Kurnool tobacco from India, Spanish tobacco, and Guatemalan tobacco. All these components blend together to create a tobacco dominant taste which develops over time, exposing a wide variety of tastes and flavors over a period of about forty-five minutes. I found that after the half hour mark, the taste slowly becomes increasingly salty and I begin to taste bold notes of smoky tobacco.
The portions were made of regular material, and I usually shook them a little before putting them in to even out the snus inside. They were quite moist, and as a result I began to taste the tobacco dominant flavors right away. The nicotine buzz also came on quite rapidly, and within a couple minutes I had a pleasant buzz which lasted for about a half hour. I generally left portions in for about an hour before they become overly moist for my tastes.
As a whole, I really enjoyed Crafted Snus Whisky Original. The delicious tobacco taste combined with peat, smoke, and whisky created a rich and well-rounded taste, and much like Islay Whisky, I can definitely see myself picking up a few more cans to savor. Being a small batch snus, I’m not sure how long Crafted Snus Whisky will be available, so I recommend placing an order sooner than later so that you don’t miss out on this delicious gem!
