A relatively new offering in the General line of snus, General Classic Licorice pairs the taste of black licorice with the popular taste of General. Each can of Classic licorice comes with 24 one gram snus portions per can. As a fan of licorice flavored snus brands (some of my favorites are Byron Anis (formerly known as Romeo y Julieta) and Nick & Johnny’s Black Tarmac) I was excited to give Classic Licorice a try.
Upon opening my can, I noticed a strong aroma of black licorice, with undertones of bergamot as well as the classic general tobacco taste. After popping in a portion, I soon noticed a black licorice taste, as well as a bit of bergamot and tobacco. The flavor reminded me a lot of classic General, except with a licorice twist to it. After about ten minutes the flavor began to subside and was gradually replaced by a salty tobacco taste which became increasingly bitter until I would take my portions out at the thirty-five minute mark.
Unlike most other snuses by Swedish Match, I found General Licorice was overly moist. Maybe it was just my can, but all the portions were very wet, and as a result didn’t last very long (less than half an hour) before producing a lot of bitter tasting drip. The nicotine kick was good however, and I found myself starting to feel a buzz within two minutes due to the moistness of the portions.
Overall, I wasn’t too big a fan of General Classic Licorice. The overly moist portions combined with the bitter tasting drip wasn’t the best of tastes compared to other licorice snuses out there. However, if Swedish Match were to lower the moisture level I would imagine this snus having the potential to taste much better.
