Produced by the American Snuff Company, Grizzly Dark Wintergreen is a popular member of the Grizzly lineup, offering a rich tobacco flavor paired with the refreshing taste of wintergreen. As a whole, the Grizzly brand has become quite popular with dippers over the years and currently holds a 31.1% marketshare, making it one of the most popular brands of dip (alongside Copenhagen and Skoal). Since I’m a pretty big fan of wintergreen flavored dips (the first brand I tried was Cope Wintergreen!) and have enjoyed the tobacco taste of Grizzly 1900 in the past, I was quite excited once I finally got a hold of a can to try! According to the American Snuff Co, “Grizzly Dark Wintergreen uses leaves that are dark-fired to bring the tobacco’s naturally bold flavor to the forefront, with the best being selected to ensure a premium smokeless tobacco product.”
Once I opened up my can, I soon began to notice a mild wintergreen aroma with undertones of smoky tobacco. Unlike most wintergreen dips, Grizzly Dark’s wintergreen flavor is quite subdued and is designed to compliment the tobacco flavor rather than overpower it. The wintergreen taste was very natural, and I found that as it slowly diminished in strength it was replaced by a rich tobacco flavor which developed as time went on.
Although the dip is a long cut, I did find it to be more finely ground than most long cuts, but I didn’t find this to be much of an issue for me. Moreover, unlike most brands of American dip (which use a blend of domestic and foreign tobaccos), Dark Wintergreen contains only American tobacco grown in Kentucky and Tennessee. I usually left dips in for around forty minutes before taking them out, and I found that the nicotine buzz generally came on quickly and lasted for quite some time.
Overall, I enjoyed dipping with Dark Wintergreen, and the strong tobacco flavors combined with the refreshingly natural wintergreen taste certainly made for an enjoyable experience! Grizzly Dark Wintergreen is a great after meal treat and it goes well with refreshing summer ales on a hot summer day!
