Over the past few years, I’ve loved the idea of chewing tobacco. As someone who enjoys chewing gum on a frequent basis, chewing tobacco combines my love of gum with my enjoyment of a good nicotine buzz. However, most flavors of chew (such as the traditional Red Man chew) don’t appeal to my tastes at all, and I always avoid using them. Although once I heard about DOS Citrus & Menthol, a new form of chew manufactured using a base comprised of 60% chewing gum and 40% is Swedish Snus, my interest was piqued and I knew that I had to give it a try. DOS Citrus & Menthol is very dry, about as dry as some of the Northerner Portions, and contains 6mg of nicotine per portion.
Upon opening a can of DOS Citrus & Menthol, I was greeted with a slight menthol aroma, but not much citrus. Since DOS is a very dry tobacco, I felt that simply taking in the aroma would be difficult to categorize this snus. Upon placing a portion into my cheek and giving it a few chews, I was greeted with a pleasant menthol cooling sensation, coupled with a slight citrus taste. The citrus flavor was quite mellow, however I did find that the the menthol flavor complimented it quite nicely. One thing I really enjoyed was how the gum base created quite a bit of flavor, and made DOS quite a bit more enjoyable to chew compared to most brands that I’ve tried.
The portions were quite small, and fit comfortably in my cheek. About every five minutes, I would give the DOS a few chews in order to release more nicotine, and I really enjoyed having control over my nicotine dosage. However, I also tried using DOS the same way as I do snus, and it worked quite well (although I preferred the chewing method). In addition, DOS contains some baking soda, which helps to whiten your teeth and freshen breath as you chew. I was able to keep my portion of DOS in for about thirty minutes before it became too runny for my tastes.
In conclusion, DOS makes for a great snus and chew hybrid. As someone who doesn’t enjoy the taste of most brands of chew, DOS was a nice change. Although I don’t see DOS replacing snus for me anytime soon, I can definitely see myself using it every now and then when I want a nice kick as well as something tasty to chew on. The only thing about DOS Citrus & Menthol which I didn’t like was that if I chewed it too frequently, I found that it would produce a slightly bitter taste.
