Snus and Colds

April 8, 2012 By James

Offroad Eucalyptus Mini is great for colds

During the past week, I’ve had a nasty cold which hasn’t been fun at all. Fortunately, after hitting the gym and taking some vitamin C, I’m finally starting to feel better. Back when I used to smoke cigarettes, colds seemed to last forever, and every cigarette I smoked would simply worsen my symptoms and irritate my throat to boot. Fortunately, since I’ve switched to snus I no longer have this problem. In fact, I find that snus can actually help lessen some of the cold symptoms.

Nicotine is a stimulant, and when I use a strong snus, it tends to really help clear my nose without the irritation of smoke. I find that the nicotine in snus also helps to give me a jolt of energy, which can keep me going longer with the cold. I tend to get tired much more quickly when I don’t feel well, and since caffeine can dehydrate you (which you want to avoid when sick!) I find snus to be the superior alternative.

When I have a cold, I tend to stick to menthol and eucalyptus flavored snuses. These flavors are very smooth and soothing on my throat which always seems to get sore when I have a cold. My favorite brands of snus for this purpose is Northerner Citrus & Menthol, Catch Eucalyptus, and Offroad Eucalyptus. In addition, I also like to have some chamonile tea alongside my snus, which helps to clear my sinuses as well as to warm me up.

I’m glad that with snus I can still enjoy a nice buzz without making myself feel even worse. I also find that without all the smoke and tar in cigarettes to hamper my recovery, I’m able to start feeling better faster, and I get sick much less than I used to. Do you have any favorite brands of snus that you like to use when you have a cold? Feel free to make your suggestions here!

Snus Compared To American Dip

March 24, 2012 By James

American Dip alongside Swedish Snus

For a while, many people have been asking me about the differences between American dip and Swedish snus and so I’ve decided to post a write-up here in the blog outlining some of the major differences between the two forms of smokeless tobacco. Although I mainly use snus, I first started off with dip and occasionally like to try different varieties of in order to mix things up a little.

The first primary difference between the two varieties of smokeless tobacco is that unlike dip, there is no need to spit while using snus. This is due to the processing of the tobacco used to make each variety. Whereas dip is fire cured, Swedish Snus is pasteurized, thus taking out the harshness of the juice and allowing you to swallow. Personally, I find that snus is superior to dip in work in school environments, as well as other places where you may not be able to spit.

The issue of curing also brings about the next difference between the two types of tobacco, health implications. Snus has been shown to contain substantially less quantities of tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) than dip, and it is these TSNAs that are often implicated in causing cancer among healthy individuals (one variety of dip contained 127ppm of TSNAs compared with 3.7ppm with a type of Swedish snus). However, in comparison to cigarettes which contain over 1,000 TSNAs per cigarette as well as tar and other chemicals, both are much safer alternatives to cigarette smoking.

There’s also a significant difference in flavor between snus and dip. I find that tobacco flavored dip tends to be sweeter than a tobacco flavored snus. Snus is also offered in a much wider range of flavors than dip, although some exotic flavors do exist, such as Skoal Peach and Kayak Grape.

Finally, Swedish snus tends to be more finely ground than even the most fine dip, and is generally placed in the upper rather than lower lip. Both snus and dip are available in portioned varieties, although there is only one form of portioned dip (Skoal Bandits). I haven’t tried the bandits, but I’ve heard that they are very popular in some places.

Despite their differences, both snus and dip can be enjoyed in their own ways. Personally, I prefer snus because there’s no need to spit, and having portions is extremely convenient.

Saving Money on Snus

March 13, 2012 By James

With the effects of the 2008 global recession still being felt in many places around the world, many people are looking to cut costs and save money in any way they can. In this post, I plan to outline some different ways that you can save money on snus by shopping at Northerner.

A Club 100 Roll of General Portion Snus

Club 100

For those of you who frequently purchase large amounts of snus, Northerner’s Club 100 can be an easy way to get a free roll of your favorite brand of snus. For every 100 cans of snus ordered, you’re eligible for one free roll of snus. A wide selection of snus is available from Club 100, and it can be a nice way to take advantage of being a frequent customer. Snus can also be gotten from Club 100 for the cost of 1,000 bonus points, so if you’ve made other purchases, these can count towards your 1,000 point total.

Pay Attention to Deals and Sales

Northerner frequently offers various promotions on all types of snus, and often these types of deals can offer a lot of value. Keeping an eye on the Current Offers and Last Chance pages can really pay off. For example, at the time of writing there is a special offer of three rolls of snus for a little more than the price of a single roll. I will also be doing my best to post information on new and upcoming sales here on the blog, so check back frequently to really benefit.

Soon to Expire/Expired Snus

In many instances, soon to expire and expired snus can be perfectly fine, and can be kept for months in proper storage. Northerner sells cans of soon to expire and expired snus at a large discount, and prices vary between $2.99 for a roll of expired snus, and $10.99 for soon to expire. The only drawbacks to ordering this type of snus is that there is limited availability, and you don’t get to choose what type of snus you get. However, if you’re looking to save money and are not picky about what snus brand you receive, then its a great idea to keep checking back and see if any new snus has recently been added to the list.

Hopefully this post will help out some of you who are looking to save money on snus. If you have any other tips or tricks that you’d like to share, feel free to leave a comment!
